Overview

Trumpeter swans were once extinct in Ontario...

A restoration project ensued to bring them back...

It was successful & The New Trumpeters were re-introduced into the "wild"... (2007)

Since then, volunteers have been feeding them, especially from November to April when it is very cold in Ontario...

The main food that is being fed is the very cheapest animal grade corn, which is dirt cheap, & quite low in nutritional content...

So the swans are getting some food...

There are now about 1200 Trumpeter Swans living in Ontario, who do not migrate south in winter...

This winter, with my own money, I fed wild bird seed, once a week (or less) to Trumpeters who live near to Bluffer's Park...

The wild bird seed, which is higher in nutritional content, gave the Trumpeters tons more vitamins & they managed to survive even the month of February when the entire bay where they were living completely froze over...

I saw Trumpeters flying more, socializing well, happy...

I'd like to continue...

Community Benefit

Bluffer's Park was once a garbage dump... It is now a beautiful park... Scarborough Arts Council is doing great things nearby...Children helped with a mosaic on the Bluffers bathroom structure... Trumpeter Swans like the protected bay area, so do other waterbirds including the very rare Bufflehead duck (there are 6 there now)... Since I started bringing the wild bird seed to Bluffers this winter, other people have started to join in... I have asked them to as well, as much as possible... I have explained that pointing cameras scares them off their food, & that wild bird seed is readily & cheaply available nearby at Canadian Tire stores...(on sale most of the time for $12.99 for 18 kilograms- an awesome price)... By March, there were maybe 16 Trumpeter swans, young & old, coming for the off chance of getting a nibble of something... The joy & delight & awe of the local population was evident...Children, retirees, wildlife volunteers, new immigrants- Just joy, love, soul, happy!!!

How will the $5K be used?

Budget Notes: Budget spending will ONLY go to the cost of the wild bird seed itself... Costs for buying, carrying, transport, lifting, labour, feeding time, delivery, cleanup, etc. will all be volunteered...(Free)
$ 5,000 Wild Bird Seed (as much as that will buy)
