Goals

  • Help reduce the stigma of mental illness
  • Create community awareness and education
  • Assist local club houses in the establishing of new programs
  • Enrich the lives of consumers through educational/social events

Overview

The Advisory Council is in the preliminary stages of planning and promoting a walk for mental health. Due to the stigma attached to mental illness few if any fund-raising events are organized. It is well documented that mental illness is underfunded at all three levels of government. Our proposed 5K walk would involve 7 communities within the Kootenay Boundary region of the West Kootenays: Kaslo, Nakusp/ New Denver/Silverton, Slocan City/Slocan Valley, Nelson/Salmo Trail, Rossland, Castlegar, Grand Forks.

Community Benefit

The 5K Walk for Mental Health will assist in promoting the need for inclusion within the larger community of those suffering from mental illness. The benefit will be increased community awareness and greater understanding of the obstacles/attitudes faced by both the families and those suffering from both diagnosed and undiagnosed mental illnesses.

How will the $10K be used?

Budget Notes: All travel expenses (mileage, meals and accomodation) will be the sole responsibility of the organizing committee (Kootenay Boundary Regional Advisory Council) despite the fact that the area involved(Kootenay Boundary) covers a significant area of south-eastern British Columbia.
