Overview

The rural community of Barriere; located north of Kamloops in the North Thompson Valley; is a beautiful place to live and raise a family. As with many rural communities, there is a lack of recreation facilities in our community.

Following the wildfires of 2003; which took the area’s largest employer; our  community has worked hard to rebuild and recover from the outflow of community members, moving away to find employment. The lack of employment, as well as the lack of large business leaves our community with many lower income families and seniors and a small tax base, making building and maintaining any kind of a recreation facility unreachable. For years the community has been looking for options that are affordable to build, maintain and use, that can be used by all members’ of the community.

We believe we have found a way. NTVIC, the District and other stakeholders are working to make our community even better with the construction of a Splash Park.

Community Benefit

As with many rural communities, there is a lack of recreation facilities in our community. Our community has many lower income families and seniors and a small tax base, making the prospect of building and maintaining any kind of a recreation facility unreachable. As summers in our area can be very hot; often reaching temperatures of 40 degrees; a splash park would be an amazing addition to Fadear Park. It would be usable by all age groups; a place for children, families and seniors to go and cool down on a hot summer day, without having to travel out of town. The Splash Park will also benefit the members of the smaller surrounding communities of Exlou, Louis Creek, Darfield, Little Fort and the Simpcw First nations reserve in Chu Chua; as it is only a short drive for them to get to the park.

How will the $100K be used?

Budget Notes: An in-kind donation with a value of $75000 for design and and project management from a retired gentelman in our community. Many donations of time labour and equipment have been promised from various area businessmen and individuals in the community.
$ 100,000 purchase and install Splash Pad
