Overview

Imagine finding yourself unable to open the cupboard or walk out to get the mail! 

VON SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) reaches older adults suffering unhealthy, and sometimes deadly consequences of sedentary lives, making it possible to change their lives by participating in physical activity and overcoming barriers such as mobility issues, weakness, degenerating health, cost, and/or lack of appropriate programming.  SMART is a "train the trainer" model in which instructors are all volunteers, peers of their clients, and passionate about helping friends and neighbours reduce loneliness and isolation; manage aging and chronic disease; and improve overall physical and mental health.  

Deliverables

  1. 20 volunteer training sessions in new communities
  2. Customized community classes and personalized in-home sessions accessible to hundreds of seniors
  3. Continual consultation with staff, volunteers and participants for quality improvement and replication

How will the $25K be used?

Budget Notes: $1000 per training sessions includes space rental, training manuals, travel, and session leadership and mentoring National coordination includes liaison with VON site staff, creating volunteer recruitment and training modules and best practices, fund raising and project management
$ 20,000 20 volunteer training sessions in different communities
$ 5,000 national program coordination and evaluation
