The Bessborough Goes Green Bathroom Renovation Project was created to teach students about environmentally friendly renovations, reducing water and energy consumption, and how to reduce your environmental footprint. On average, conventional urinals waste 150000 gallons of water per year, and each toilet flush wastes 2-4 litres. This renovation would allow our school to save close to 2 million gallons of water per year, and reduce energy consumption by close to 80% by using energy efficient hand dryers and sensor lights. The hands-free elements would provide a more hygienic environment for students. Water and energy are valuable resources that we, and future generations must protect. This project will serve as a learning project that reinforces curricular outcomes related to environmental awareness, conservation, green energy alternatives and technology applications to reduce environmental impact.

Community Benefit

Environmental stewardship and responsibility are elements which all students need to learn so that our Earth can be sustainable; however, our learning environment is not always the best example of conservation and environmental awareness. Preservation and protection of fresh water, as well as energy conservation are lessons that we all must learn, and through this project, students at Bessborough School will learn about methods and technologies that will lessen their environmental impact and conserve energy and precious fresh water resources. To change the future, we must act today and educate our future leaders about how to fix the mistakes that past generations have made, and continue to make. This project is an investment in education and environmental sustainability that will pay dividends both within the school and community for years to come as residents modify and change their wasteful habits and practices.
