Overview

J-L Couroux is a French Catholic primary school in Carleton Place, Ontario.  There are approximately 185 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 8.  The children at the school have 1 small play structure that is not suitable for the 3-5 year olds.  We are building an age appropriate structure for them.  The existing structure has to be shared by the 1-5 graders.  They each have a designated day of the week where they can play on it.  The 6, 7 and 8th graders are not allowed on the structure at recess. We are also adding soccer nets, basket ball nets, tether ball games and tripple hoop games.  Our goal is to have a play yard where ALL the children can access a play structure, keep our youth healthy and active and to promote sportsmanship. The play structure committee was officially founded in September 2010 but the school has been fundraising since 2009. We have raise $24,000 so far!

Community Benefit

The children of the school and the children of the community will have a safe area to play. Health Canada recommends that children have at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. We hope that by providing them with a fun play area they will get their daily dose of exercise and bring home healthy habits that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Hopefully putting a dent in childhood obesity.
