Overview

Tapestry’s Youth Arts Labs give youth participants the chance to engage and express their creative minds by telling unique stories of their communities through new opera.

Tapestry employs professionals from classic and new arts disciplines to mentor youth in the company’s acclaimed new creation process. Inspiration is drawn from the participants’ own ideas and experiences of community, culminating with a smash up new opera performance that mixes theatre, visual arts, dance, hip hop and spoken word.

Youth Arts Labs builds upon 10 years of successful outreach by Tapestry. The INside Opera Education Programme has engaged hundreds of participants from GTA including longstanding programmes in two of Toronto’s most important gateway communities: St. Jamestown and Regent Park. Youth Arts Labs will soon double its size with new programmes in the Jane-Finch corridor and Brampton.

Community Benefit

Within the recent years Tapestry operas for young audiences have tackled important social issues such as bullying prevention, friendship and healthy eating while introducing the operatic medium to schools and communities across the province. Telling these important stories through opera allows children, teachers and community organizers to engage with the social issues in a new way. It is a powerful experience when children can tell the stories that are relevant to their own lives through the art of music creation and performance. Performances from the Youth Arts Labs will provide opportunities for parents, artists, students and the broader community to see the work created by youth in collaboration with established artists.
