Overview

There is no specific facility for skaters/BMX'ers to practice and perform their skills in Waterloo.  It means travelling out of town to gain access to facilities or skating in public gathering places and private land, causing conflict with other users/property owners.
The action sport park is to open in late summer of 2011.  The more money raised by the community the better & more dynamic the park can be.The park will provide a safe, positive environment for youth to develop their skills and foster a sense of belonging and community amongst skaters. A designated space to skate is essential in fostering better relations between the athletes and other community members.Skateboarding promotes physical activity in kids and youth. This is especially important in the age of video games and the rising childhood obesity rates. The more we promote physical activity in our younger generation, the better for our kids, the community, and our nation.

Community Benefit

Kids, the local community, SW Ontario and Canada will all benefit from this project. Skateboarding promotes an active lifestyle, including unstructured play. Unstructured play is critical to the development of children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “unstructured play helps children learn how to work collaboratively, to share, negotiate, resolve conflicts, and learn self-advocacy skills." Skateboarding is a form of unstructured play which allows for children/youth to be creative (there's no right or wrong way to skateboard) and to be intrinsically motivated (skateboarding is a non-competitive sport, the athlete seeks to push themselves and achieve goals they set.) The park will be a hub for the action sports community in Waterloo. Not only will this increased number of people help to deter crime in the park, but there's also the potential to host different action sports events. This will increase tourism and be a positive economic benefit to the area.

How will the $100K be used?

$ 100,000 towards construction of skateboard park
