Overview

Youth Volunteer Markham was founded to promote volunteerism and connect youth with volunteer opportunities in the community. This ultimately encourages youth to get involved with their community and build up skills along the way. We currently provide up-to-date listings of volunteer opportunities, a scholarship and awards calendar, an opportunities calendar (conferences and enrichment programs) and have recently expanded and branched out to address another youth concern: job opportunities. Our project idea is to engage and encourage the Youth of Markham and York Region to volunteer through community events. We want to host large scale volunteer, job and university fairs for student in Markham and York Region. Through these events we hope to reach out to over 2000 high school and elementary students.

Community Benefit

This project will benefit students because volunteering is fundamental in developing real life skills as well as mandatory for students to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Youth Volunteer Markham (YVM) assists students who are having trouble finding ways to obtain volunteer hours with the up-to-date volunteer listings. As well, YVM also has a scholarships and awards calendar so students can become informed about financial and tuition assistance. More youth employment postings will benefit the livelihood of youth and help local business who will be paying student wages rather than the normal wage rate. All of this will improve the wellbeing of the community and open doors to more opportunities to the youth in the community.
